Heat and fire burst through her, engulfing her, burning away the numbness in an instant to be replaced by a lava rush of energy and the dragonâs roar of triumph in her head.
She threw her head back as the power poured into her, through her, taking her. Rising up, her feet no longer touching the earth, she sighed as the melding settled, as she and Rory because a force like no other. When she touched down onto the ground again, she allowed the wings of flame along her back to expand and stretch.
Then she opened her eyes and looked at the vampire.
Fire engulfed her, had become a part of her now, the flames dancing along her arms, legs, chest, around her head. Sheâd never seen herself in a mirror like this, but knew the flames were everywhere, encasing her in bright orange yellow incandescence. She raised her sword, also alight with the glow of heat, the tip almost white. Everything looked different, brighter, clearer, sharper.
The vampire was no longer a vaguely man-shaped shadow. She could see his ragged black clothing now, the gashes in his shirt from their fight. He was as skeletal as the other vampires, with black stains of blood covering his chest, revealing where wounds had so recently healed. The green glow in his eyes had hues of yellow and blue to it, a more finely detailed reflection of the magic he commanded. The sharp edges of his teeth glistened.
âWhat are you?â he asked, his voice deepening.
She could see him pulling in power from the earth, a leeching of energy that rose around him in a green fog. Not something sheâd have noticed with her own vision. Like watching someone encased in toxic swamp gases mixed with nuclear waste material. The details were so clear, so distinct, and so horrible, she sort of missed her ordinary human vision.
When she spoke, her voice wasnât her own. Now a melding of hers and Roryâs. Deep and feminine and reverberant. Power that echoed off the hills.
âI may not be able to kill you,â she said. âBut I can contain you forever. And as you can see, I will be no oneâs servant.â
The vampire attacked. Given she was now made of flame, that seemed a really stupid idea.
He swiped at her with his poison-tipped claws. She knew in some part of her that he was still moving as fast as heâd moved earlier, but now she could see him, watch his actions as if he moved at ordinary human speeds.
She stepped aside, allowing his nails to hit air, throwing the creature off balance. Then she swung her sword up, almost slowly, and the fire blade sliced through his arm. Black blood oozed out of the hole as the vampire screamed.
Next to her, Joan felt the clawing of something against her ankle. She looked down to see the bone hands of the vampireâs âsonâ scrambling to grab her. The bones crackled and snapped as the flames burned through them. With a mild kick, she tossed the hands aside to smoke in the cool earth.
